General questions: natural disasters in Spain
Do you have any questions? We will gladly give you clear answers
Am I insured against natural disasters in Spain?
Yes. In Spain, through your insurance, you automatically contribute to the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros (CCS)., which covers certain natural disasters.
What is the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros (CCS)?
The CCS is a Spanish government agency that compensates damages for severe and exceptional events, independent of your insurer.
What events are covered by the CCS?
These include severe floods, earthquakes, exceptional storms and certain social events such as terrorism.
What is meant by “extraordinary risks”?
These are rare events of exceptional strength or impact, clearly more severe than normal weather conditions.
Who handles my claim: the insurer or the CCS?
It depends on the type of claim. Sometimes the insurer handles the case, but the compensation comes (in part) from the CCS.
How do I find out if my claim is covered by the CCS?
In practice, you often notice little difference. We review for you who is competent and guide you to the correct notification.
What is a disaster area declaration (zona catastrófica)?
This is an official decision of the Spanish government after a major disaster, independent of your insurance and the CCS.
Does a disaster area declaration affect my insurance?
No. Public support is completely separate from insurance coverage and from the CCS system.
Can I get government assistance in addition to insurance?
Yes, sometimes they do. That depends on government decisions and applies in addition to any insurance reimbursements.
