Electricity and power outages
Do you have any questions? We will gladly give you clear answers
Is damage due to power failure or power surge insured?
Often yes. Direct damage to appliances or installation may be covered if the cause fits within your policy. We check with you right away.
What should I do first in the event of a home power outage?
Turn off suspicious groups, take pictures of error messages, and note date and time. If there is danger or smell of fire, call 911.
Should I have a technical report prepared?
Yes. Have a licensed electrician document what the cause is (power surge, short circuit, lightning, internal defect) , have him describe the damaged parts and attach that report to your file.
The outage is due to the electricity supplier. What now?
Report the failure to the supplier and ask for a reference number. That number is important for Zurich to review your case correctly.
My device is broken. Should I go to the official brand repairer?
Not always. There are assistant repairmen who are allowed to assess and repair small appliances. We will send you the correct procedure.
Are older devices also reimbursed?
It depends on your policy and the age/condition of the device. Often restrictions apply from a certain age. We check this on a case-by-case basis.
Should I keep track of broken appliances?
Yes. Keep them until the file is completed. Take clear pictures and keep invoices and the technical report.
Lightning damage: what's different?
Follow the same steps, but the report should explicitly state that the damage was caused by lightning/voltage surge. Official weather data helps.
Is electrical damage to solar panels covered?
No. Electrical damage to devices that transform energy (such as inverters or panels) is basically excluded. If in doubt consult us. Structural breakage may fall under another section.
Food spoilage in refrigerator/freezer after power outage: is it insured?
Often up to a maximum amount. Take photos before discarding, list products and provide receipts if possible.
No power in (much of) the home. Can I request emergency intervention?
Yes. With some policies, Zurich's 24/7 helpline will send a professional for an emergency repair (labor for the intervention covered according to policy). Call 933 660 777.
What documents expedite my file?
Technical report, photos, make/model/age of appliances, invoices of repair/replacement and (if applicable) supplier reference number.
How is GrupoXandra helping me during this process?
We open and follow up your file from start to finish, collect all info for Zurich and contact you in case of delays. One point of contact in your language, until everything is settled
Had damage? We'll take care of it for you.
A claim is annoying enough, especially if you are in another country and not everything proceeds in your own language. That's why we make sure that your damage is handled correctly, clearly and as smoothly as possible.
