Flood and sea wave damage in Spain: damages, coverage and role of the Consorcio
Do you have any questions? We will gladly give you clear answers
Is damage caused by floods or sea waves insured in Spain?
Yes, but not through the ordinary insurer. This claim is handled in Spain by the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros (CCS)..
What is the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros (CCS)?
The CCS is a Spanish government agency that compensates damages for exceptional events such as floods, sea waves and earthquakes.
Will my insurer or GrupoXandra handle this case?
No. The assessment and decision lies entirely with the CCS. Insurers have no influence on this.
Is every water damage automatically a flood?
No. Only extraordinary floods or exceptional sea waves are eligible for coverage through the CCS.
When does the CCS consider a flood to be “extraordinary”?
This is determined based on official measurements such as rainfall, water levels and wave data in your region.
What damages are usually not covered by the CCS?
Damage from ordinary rain, seepage, clogged drains, rising damp or poor maintenance is usually not covered.
What information does the CCS need to review a case?
The exact date (and preferably time) of the incident and the address of the affected building.
Can I file a claim with the CCS myself?
Yes. You must file Open directly at the CCS. They will inform you of the next steps.
Does a disaster area declaration affect my insurance?
No. A disaster area declaration is separate from your insurance and from the CCS, but it can trigger additional government support.
How does GrupoXandra help you with flood or sea wave damage?
We clearly explain how the system works and guide you where possible, but the decision always lies with the CCS.
Had damage? We'll take care of it for you.
A claim is annoying enough, especially if you are in another country and not everything proceeds in your own language. That's why we make sure that your damage is handled correctly, clearly and as smoothly as possible.
